Marching. Chanting. Solidarity. All in the name of the Dreamers.

Allies marched alongside Dreamers in support of those protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, known as DACA.These individuals, also known as Dreamers, are young undocumented immigrants brought to the United States when they were young.

The march began in Los Angeles amongst the noise and hustle of what is known as little Central America that surrounds MacArthur Park, between the streets of Alvarado and Sixth Street, and continued to Olivera Street. Vendors and residents watched other Latinos take action to stand up to President Donald Trump’s decision to rescind DACA. At least 800,000 individuals are currently protected by DACA.

Even with the most recent meeting that took place on Wednesday, September 13 between Democratic House Representative Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer and Donald Trump, a final decision on what will happen with those under DACA is uncertain. Trump has denied that any deal was made but tweeted what appeared to be support for DACA.

Dreamers are still working, getting an education, and pushing for a permanent fix to allow them to continue to live in the only country they have ever known for most of their lives.

The Trump administration announced that it intends to eliminate Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program ,which protects thousands of immigrants nationwide. After the announcement, there has been an unsettling atmosphere in the communities surrounding Los Angeles. A 47-year-old man mentioned that he has lived here since he was 10 years old and never has he felt “disenchanted,” especially in a city like this one. Photo/Pablo Unzueta. September 10, 2017.
